When you enter the Park, there is a small, 2-lane paved road that runs about 3 miles. It ends at the beach, and then there is 70 miles of barrier reef beach and dunes. You can drive on the beach (5, 10, 50, even 70 miles) until you find the spot for Sparky , then pull off the main driving lane, park, put up some shade, and have some fun. The surf is in Gulf of Mexico, so it isn't rough. Jellyfish population varies depending upon season, so it's a good thing to bring some vinegar and meat tenderizer to stop any jellyfish stings from itching. Plenty of birds. Little ghost crabs come out at night and run around the beach. Please note that this is the beach -- you will need to bring plenty of water, and some portable shade. There are outside showers back at the Welcome Center where you (and Sparky ) can wash off. The Seashore is a Kemps Ridley Turtle nesting place, so please make sure your dogs do not disturb any turtle nests.
